In his address to Parliament, István Hiller welcomed the high national and European turnout in the EP elections. "It is good feeling for all democrats," he said, and congratulated the elected MEPs. The MSZP MP expressed confidence that the new MEPs will serve the interests of the country. He reminded them that in the course of history, it was always beneficial for the country to belong to organizations with Western European affiliations, and when it had the chance to choose at all, it always chose this path. The interest of the country, emphasized Hiller, is to be at the heart of European mainstream policy: everything that strengthens it in this regard is useful. In connection with this, he drew attention to the lack of justification for propagandistic or genuinely meant opinions that forecasted a breakthrough against major political forces in Europe. This did not happen, Christian Democrats, Social Democrats and the Greens will be in overwhelming majority in the European Parliament. The Group of European Socialists and Social Democrats, to which the MSZP MEP will also belong, will be a key player of the central decision-making. “It is in the interest of the country to keep it in the center. Anything that drives it out of there can cause it to drift to the periphery,” he said. István Hiller closed his speech by stating that he believed in a Europe that could be the basis for future development; a Social Europe, where young people are happy to grow up, where men and women are equal.
Hiller: Hungary Must Stay in European Center
In history, it has always been a good choice if we belonged to organizations with Western affiliations. It is still in the interest of the country to remain at the heart of European mainstream policy, said István Hiller evaluating the lessons of the EP elections.
