Homeland. Love. Europe.

Homeland. Love. Europe.
There are three Hungarian truths, they say. In our case, this means three words that are deeply interrelated: Homeland, Love, Europe.
This is the title and philosophical guideline of the MSZP European Parliamentary Program. Homeland, because the patriotic representation of Hungarian interests and values comes first. Love, because we have had enough of the hatred campaign  of the Fidesz elite, and the ways they turn Hungarian people  against each other. Europe, because the future of our country can only be imagined in a European community of deeper cooperation.

European integration plays a decisive role in maintaining the peace on the continent as well as guaranteeing general welfare, prosperity, human and social rights, and European solidarity.

There is no alternative to a well-functioning European Union. A strong Europe protects itself from social crisis, economic hardships, but above all, from war. We believe that Jean Monnet, one of the founding fathers of the EU, is right: "European roots are so deep that the European conception will survive each crisis and revolution."

We, Hungarian Social Democrats, decided on the list of MEPs last weekend and decided on the program, the European vision that we offer to the Hungarian people. We want a European Union that focuses on people, and places the social Europe in the center.  Which guarantees social and physical security for its citizens; provides common and effective responses to the challenges facing the entire European community through closer, deeper integration.

Our Europe does not tolerate some governments breaking the EU treaty and ignoring European values; prevents Mafia-like networks from expanding from development funds and stealing without consequences.

In the past decade, right-wing, people’s party leaders have been at the forefront of European decision-making forums, unable to cope with their tasks. They primarily represented the interests of European multinational corporations and big business. There is a need for change, a left-wing turn, a stronger representation of employees' interests in Europe.

By creating a social Europe, MSZP guarantees social and physical security, equal minimum rights and services. We initiate the creation of a uniform EU unemployment insurance scheme that can contribute to the catching up of the wages in less developed countries and to halting long-term emigration from the eastern Member States and the reversal of the process on the long run.
Socialist MEPs will act in every European forum to ensure that the minimum wage in each Member State exceeds the poverty threshold. The social Europe we propose is an accurate and credible alternative to the insane destruction of Fidesz. Europe of the people instead of Europe of the elite!
After the Hungarian PM’s landmark 2014 speech in Tusványos, in which he proclaimed his desire to turn Hungary into an illiberal state, I pledged to draw the public’s attention to the transgressions of this regime in an open letter every week. This is the 230th time I ring the bells of alarm, as it still seems necessary. Also, because as a radical European Democrat, it is my duty to do so.
