Hungary’s Interest: We Do Not Bargain with Orbán!
Laws are binding on everyone, obviously. And the rule of law means that laws are also binding on those in power, as this is what protects citizens from excesses of power.

Orbán only likes it when the law is binding on others and refuses to be bound by anything. He therefore rejects the rule of law.

We in the S&D Group in the European Parliament, however, want the law to protect citizens against their state, which is why we are fighting for the rule of law. We want neither the taxes of Hungarian taxpayers paid with difficulties nor EU subsidies to be pocketed by Orbán and his circles. It is therefore essential for us that the rule of law be a condition for the payment of European subsidies.

Prior to the meeting of the European Council, we, together with a number of our fellow Members, wrote to the President of the European Parliament, the Commissioners and Prime Ministers of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D Group) and the President of the Party of European Socialists.

We reiterated that we are not going to bargain: we will only vote in favour of the seven-year budget and the Recovery Package in the European Parliament if the rule of law is inevitably included. Our call has been signed by representatives of nineteen Member States. Today, they too know what we have known for a long time: there is no bargaining with Orbán. We have a huge struggle ahead of us, but we shall defend righteousness. It is the interest of our homeland.
